Each year AidCamps International runs a school-building project in conjunction with SHUMAS and takes fifteen paying volunteers to work on the project. It is because three of the BSFA trustees took part in one of these projects that Building Schools for Africa came into existence. We work closely with AidCamps International and can thoroughly recommend their projects.

The most recent AidCamp held in Cameroon was in the Teloh quarter of the village of Bamouka. This took place in November 2009.

When the BSFA team visited the village of Teloh in 2008 and saw the state of the school there, we were happy to recommend it to AidCamps for their next project. Just over 600 children were on the role of the school at that time, with over 100 children in most of the classrooms. Only two of the classrooms had tin roofs and most classes were abandoned during the rains because they become awash.

The school now proudly boasts four brand new, weatherproof, light, airy and hygienic classrooms with a Head Teacher's office and a storeroom. The entire village was thrilled with their new classrooms and the Chairman of the PTA said that it was the first example of real development in Teloh since the stone age.

If you are a seasoned traveller looking for a social working job, and would like to undertake some Independent voluntary work with SHUMAS, visit the AidCamps International website and look at the opportunities available through them.

One recent volunteer through AidCamps was Dr. Peter Hearn who ran a clinic in the village of Bui. Since his return to the UK, he has established a small charity which funds the training of nurses to work in rural village clinics in Cameroon.
